Port de Pollenca

Port de Pollença, known also in Spanish as Puerto Pollensa, is on the Bay of Pollença on Mallorca’s north-east coast. The surrounding scenery is totally stunning with the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range rising behind it serving as a backdrop and the impressive Cap de Formentor a little to the north. The Port is actually a part of the attractive town of Pollença which is found just 4 miles further inland, whilst Cap de Formentor is accessed via a 8 mile stretch of road which starts just outside of the town.
Port de Polença boasts two excellent beaches. Firstly there is Pollença Beach, an expanse of golden sand 1km in length, with lots of space for bathing and watersports, plus access to the marina with its chic restaurants. Then there is Albercutx Beach, a narrow but bustling stretch well over a mile long and very family-friendly. Here it is agreeably shady in summer and the water is quite shallow, so excellent for children.

The area around the port is very attractive and takes life at a leisurely pace. Parallel with the beach is the famous Pine Walk, a tree-fringed walkway hugging the the coast. Ideal for an afternoon or evening stroll by the sea, it is also full of restaurants serving a wide variety of dishes, including international and Spanish dishes, although specialising in seafood.

The main square in the port , Plaza Miguel Capllonch, is also brimming with restaurants and bars, and is home to a bustling market each Wednesday. The market is definitely worth a visit.

The tip of Cap de Formentor takes about 30 minutes to reach either by bus or car. For the many enthusiastic walkers visiting the area, the journey will be a little longer. The famous cape is a rugged peninsula with huge cliffs dipping precipitously into the sea. The term “breathtaking vistas” would not be an understatement.

Most of the tourist developments are located in the area of the port, however the old Roman town of Pollença is only a short journey inland. It is well worth a visit, and the narrow winding streets dating back hundreds of years are very attractive. There is also an excellent range of shops.

If viewing luxury yachts appeals to you then the bay of Pollensa is well worth a visit, although there are thankfully still a few local fishing boats to be seen.

Apart from the main beaches there are also a number of smaller natural beaches in the area, all offering a full range of facilities and access to sporting activities. All benefit from warm shallow water, making them particularly popular with families with small children.

During the summer months the whole area of the port comes alive, although it never seems overcrowded, and there is a a good variety of shops, bars and cafés on hand. Beyond October, several of these will close until the start of the main tourist season begins the following Easter, however others will remain open catering for the local residents and large expatriate communities in the area.

Pollença is a great base for walking and sports holidays. Many keen hikers and also cyclists will stay in the area, particularly outside the main tourist seasons, since much of the land in the area is quite flat, with the notable exceptions of the dramatic Sierra de Tramuntana mountains and the incredible Cap de Formentera which are not far away.

From October onwards the resort becomes popular with middle-aged and retired travellers who often stay longer, glad of some respite from the winter cold which will be permeating much of the rest of Europe.

Port de Pollença has always been popular with artists and even celebrities, but particularly writers, perhaps the most famous visitor being Agatha Christie who visited the town in the early 1920s, staying at a hotel near to the Pine Walk, which she described in her volume “Problem at Pollensa Bay and Other Stories”.
